This page expands on a diagram introduced in the chapter Being Chiron in an anthology on the Centaurs called Sideways from Saturn. Here you will find a way of studying planetary midpoints not only as technical tools of astrology, but also as thresholds of initiation – points where two archetypes or streams of energy meet and reveal a deeper truth, in this case a way in which Chiron, the Wise Centaur can show up and be experienced in your very own natal chart or that of your clients. My AI assistants helped assemble parts of the following information.
As Chiron occupies my natal 7th House – relationship is a leitmotif. The MP (midpoint) technique is a powerful and fun way to explore not only one’s personal relationship with Chiron in the chart, but also how other planetary pairs deepen and fill out this picture.
Chiron, the Sacred Warrior and Initiator, stands at the root of this mandala, aligned with the Sun and the Galactic Center along a vertical kundalini spine. Around him unfold three families of midpoints (MPs):
- Chiron-centric: structural thresholds, moving away from Chiron – inward towards Mercury and outward towards Pluto (the planetary bookends of our solar system), mirroring the centaur’s role at the edge of the known. E.g. Saturn-Uranus, etc.
- Octavic: octave relationships where the personal (inner solar system) is lifted into the transpersonal (outer solar system). E.g. Venus-Neptune, etc.
- Portalic: gateways – from Mercury inward to the Sun and from Sol to tghe galaxy, and from Pluto outward through the Oort Cloud and on to the stars – and thus both portals to the ‘great beyond’. E.g. Mercury-Pluto
- A 4th helpful MP, the Kundalinic brings together the two “centers” of our mandalic microcosmos – Chiron at base or root, and Sol at crown. This can be understood & experienced as the living spine of authentic dialogue within our mandala, reminding us of another of Chiron’s several embodied archetypes – Micro-Avatar.
Esoteric tradition sees Sirius as the source of spiritual illumination, the Sun as its transmitter, and Chiron as the Earthly archetype of the Teacher who channels this wisdom through mentorship and initiation. The previous three MP families lead from Chiron to the Sun. The kundalinic path and midpoint provide a short-cut or turbo connection. (As my natal chart contains an exact Chiron-Sun square, this one is important for me.)A 5th category of MP to work with is the Secondary Midpoint, i.e. the MP between a planetary pair MP (e.g. Jupiter-Neptune) and Chiron himself, or for that matter another planetary MP. The latter is wandering into subtle harmonic dimensions and probably way too much detail for most folk (my Descendent & most of H7 are in Virgo 😀).
Each midpoint shines a light on how Chiron appears in your own chart, and each offers a station in the soul’s hero’s journey. May this mandala help you not only to study Chiron, but to be Chiron, i.e. to inhabit the midpoint space-between where wound and wisdom meet.
Practice: The Art of Being Chiron
Here’s a gentle 4-step practice to help you enter into the beingness of the Wise Centaur, to sense how Chiron himself might sense. Starting with exploring the midpoint mandala experientially, rather than only conceptually:
One: Locating and Sitting with the Midpoint
-
- Using your natal chart, calculate (or look up) the midpoint between one of the planetary pairs in the diagram (e.g. Mars-Pluto, Venus–Neptune, Mercury–Pluto).
You can get help at:
1. astro.com -> Extended Chart Selection->Chart drawing style->Ebertin style (w. midpoints). MPs for all planetary pairs are listed by zodiacal order & by orb.
2. A/B Middle Point Calculator on Astro-Seek.com
- Using your natal chart, calculate (or look up) the midpoint between one of the planetary pairs in the diagram (e.g. Mars-Pluto, Venus–Neptune, Mercury–Pluto).
-
- Note the MP’s zodiac degree, and which house & sign it occupies in your chart
- Note the MP’s zodiac degree, and which house & sign it occupies in your chart
-
- In quiet reflection, imagine the two planets approaching each other and blending at this degree.
-
- Ask inwardly: What does this meeting stir in me? Where in my life do I feel this tension, this bridge, or this call?
-
- If you like, place a hand on or breathe into the body where you sense it most strongly.
Two: Inviting Chiron’s Presence
- If you like, place a hand on or breathe into the body where you sense it most strongly.
-
- Now bring awareness to Chiron’s placement in your chart.
-
- Visualize a vertical line connecting Chiron (root) with the Sun (heart-mind) and up toward the Galactic Center (crown).
-
- Let the energy of the MP rise along this spine, as if Chiron is guiding it upward.
-
- Journal, move, or sound whatever emerges, however small, as a gesture of your own hero’s journey.
Three: Connecting Earth and Heaven
Choose a pair of planets from the mandala (e.g. Saturn–Uranus). Pause, breathe & imagine those two bodies/beings meeting there, leaning toward each other, meeting in your chart like two travellers at a crossroad. Feel the spark at their meeting place. Then invite Chiron, the Sacred Warrior, to lift that spark along the Kundalini spine of our relational mandala – from root to Sun, from Sun to the stars. Listen for the whisper of what is being born in you, noticing what arises – a feeling, image, or impulse, and let it speak or move.
Four: Being Chiron demonstration of a Korason Method Articulation
using non-verbal, conscious sounding & mindful movement to ground & anchor the centauric relationship in the soma (after all, our body is our horse part 😀).
Blessing
May the midpoint keys you explore, open doors of discovery!
May Chiron walk beside you as healer, initiator, warrior and guide.
And may each meeting point in your chart
rise like a spark, from Root to Heart.
From Heart to Crown,
wound to wisdom,
until your whole being sings
in harmony with the Earth & the stars.

Practice, Philosophy, Power & Potential of Midpoint Study
Midpoints in astrology represent the energetic meeting place between two planets, a symbolic “bridge” where their qualities converge, blend, and express in a subtle but potent way. Astrologers often treat them as sensitive points that reveal underlying patterns, tensions, or opportunities for greater integration, much like a hidden dialogue between planetary archetypes.
When considered in relation to Chiron, the Wounded Healer, midpoints can illuminate where personal and collective wounds seek mediation, offering insight into how polarities may find balance and how healing potential can emerge from apparent contradictions. Rather than choosing one side of a polarity, midpoints suggest synthesis, inviting a third way that holds complexity without collapsing into conflict or dualism.
This principle resonates with the broader spiritual and psychological wisdom of the “middle path,” especially as taught in Buddhist tradition. The middle path does not simply mean compromise; rather, it is a conscious attunement to reality beyond extremes, a way of living that cultivates wholeness, compassion, and authentic dialogue.
In times of personal or collective trauma, midpoint consciousness can echo this stance by guiding us toward spaces of mediation, reconciliation, and healing. In the midst of today’s global crisis – ecological, political, and social – the midpoint principle reminds us that healing arises not by rigidly clinging to one polarity, but through encountering the dynamic space in-between, where unity and non-dualism become lived experiences.
Working with Chiron through midpoints, we are invited into a process that is both astrological and deeply human: learning to hold paradox, transmute division, and create pathways toward reconciliation and renewal.
A practical example of midpoint work involves the Sun/Moon midpoint in relationship to Chiron. The Sun/Moon midpoint is a core integration point in the chart where conscious will (Sun) and emotional instinct (Moon) merge, symbolizing the “inner marriage” and foundation for authentic relating. When Chiron engages this midpoint – by conjunction, square, or opposition—there is a profound invitation to heal inner division and to reconcile both psychological and archetypal polarities.
Such a configuration may bring painful soul experiences that prompt deep self-examination and, at times, transformative events touching health, relationships, or existential meaning. Yet, it also potentiates growth: one’s life-stream becomes a vessel for greater empathy, healing, and midwifing unity out of fragmentation.
Symbolically, Chiron at the Sun/Moon midpoint embodies the “middle path”—not passivity or avoidance, but a conscious engagement with the tensions and wounds that shape personal and collective stories. This point becomes a living demonstration that true dialogue, within oneself and with others, is rooted in the willingness to stand in the space between rather than retreating to extremes.
In moments of crisis, conflict, or trauma, such midpoint activations (by transit for example) illuminate a way forward for healing that is neither denial nor destructive confrontation, but rather mediation and compassionate holding. In this path, the wounding is neither bypassed nor absolute; instead, the process of integration carries the promise of unity and the possibility for authentic wholeness, both personally and collectively.
The provided diagram Planetary Midpoint Mandala visually maps out a cosmological and planetary system, linking Chiron’s position to various planetary midpoints using three pairing types: Chiron-centric (circles), Octavic (squares), and Portalic (triangles). These structures not only reflect astrological technique but also suggest a framework for spiritual or psychological mediation and/or initiation, emphasizing transition points or “portals” that allow new states of consciousness and integration.
This symbolic language aligns with the function of midpoints as energetic bridges, but the diagram takes it further by referencing larger systemic influences such as the Galactic Center, Sirius, the Oort Cloud, and the Kuiper Belt. The presence of these elements invites a holistic, even transpersonal approach to Chiron’s healing narrative—situating personal trauma and growth within a vast cosmic dialogue.
In this way, the image mirrors the Buddhist middle path: healing, transformation, and authentic dialogue emerge at the dynamic “in-between,” where local and cosmic, inner and outer, trauma and transcendence, meet and are mediated through attentive presence. Midpoints thus become not only technical points of calculation, but portals—gateways for unity, synthesis, and planetary healing at a crucial turning point for humanity.
Applying a Midpoint Orientation to Mediation & Authentic Dialogue
A healing midpoint, when applied to a conflict like the Jewish-Palestinian one in Israeli and its Occupied Territories (Gaza and the West Bank), envisions a symbolic “third space” where adversarial energies or polarities, such as security versus freedom, historical narratives, or race and religion, are encountered not as irreconcilable opposites, but as energies that can be integrated and transformed through authentic dialogue and new forms of relationship.
Just as a midpoint in astrology unites planetary functions, a mediating midpoint in such a sociopolitical conflict would serve as a place of new possibility: not simply compromise or the suppression of difference, but the birth of a new pattern through courageous mutual recognition, deep listening, and creative synthesis.
Practically, this midpoint “feels” like a zone of tension and potential: uncomfortable yet alive, where genuine engagement occurs just beyond old identities and defences. For Israeli Jews and Palestinians, this could manifest as shared spaces for collaborative problem-solving, narrative-sharing, or grassroots initiatives that allow both sides to tell their stories and actively witness each other’s humanity, moving beyond the zero-sum logic of political “victory” or loss.
If both sides could find and reside in this midpoint (where perspective, compassion and empathy can bloom), the results might include small but meaningful breakthroughs in trust, reduced animosity, and new forms of co-creation. The outcome is not immediate harmony, but the gradual transmutation of collective trauma into a foundation for mutual dignity and a new narrative, offering a template for reconciliation even amid deep structural wounds.
In the language of astrology, living from the midpoint means both peoples (or planets) become agents in transforming their shared fate – not erasing suffering, but converting it into wisdom and compassion that radiate outward to the wider world.
Examples of Working with Midpoints and Chiron
One: from My Own Natal Chart (see Being Chiron chapter):
The Saturn-Uranus midpoint is a powerful point of tension and innovation, especially as it relates to Chiron, whose very elliptical orbit bridges these two contrasting energies—the conservative, structured nature of Saturn and the radical, liberating force of Uranus. My Saturn-Uranus midpoint at 18° Cancer in the 4th house, exactly conjunct Mercury and trine Jupiter, creates a nexus where themes of security, tradition (Cancer/H4), communication (Mercury), and expansion or wisdom (Jupiter) are highlighted. When considered in relation to Chiron at 3° Scorpio in the 7th house, this midpoint brings light to core wounds around intimacy, trust, and transformation in partnerships.
This midpoint, especially being activated by Mercury and Jupiter, suggests that healing may come through conscious dialogue, self-reflection, and the cultivation of wisdom and growth-oriented attitudes in family or ancestral contexts (H4). The trine to Jupiter signals a capacity for optimism and the transmutation of emotional wounds into opportunities for learning and abundance, possibly through sharing insights with others or through partnership dynamics. (I have worked as a Life Coach for 40 years).
The connection to Chiron in Scorpio H7 deepens this process, inviting me to face fears, transform old patterns in relationships, and ultimately discover a bridge between tradition (Saturn), freedom (Uranus), and the possibility of healing intimate wounds through authentic dialogue and wise mediation. This midpoint pattern supports the middle path, encouraging integration across polarities and a holistic approach to personal and relational transformation at this critical time for humanity.
The Shadow Side
The Saturn-Uranus midpoint, especially when activated in the natal chart, contains profound tension. The shadow often emerges as feelings of alienation, unpredictability, or black-and-white thinking. This midpoint can reflect inner stress, a struggle to reconcile stability with breakthrough, and at its most challenging, a tendency toward rigidity, abrupt decisions, or difficulty integrating change without upheaval. The shadow may also manifest as emotional suppression, sudden eruptions, or the sense of being perpetually at odds with one’s environment or relationships—a potential for internal earthquakes and an undercurrent of existential anxiety.
However, what elevates this midpoint configuration in my chart is its role within an exact Grand Water Trine involving Mercury, Jupiter-Chariklo in Scorpio, and the Ascendant in Pisces. Here, the Saturn-Uranus midpoint is harmonized and uplifted, transforming tension into intuition, fluidity, and compassionate presence. This trine empowers a deep emotional intelligence and graceful adaptability – the capacity to nurture, heal, and bridge extremes with wisdom and empathy.
The centaur Chariklo (wife of Chiron), adds an extra layer of grace and gentle endurance, reinforcing boundaries and supporting relational healing. Mercury’s presence in the trine amplifies communication and synergy, while Jupiter expands optimism, spiritual inspiration, and opportunities for personal growth. The result is a configuration that can access remarkable healing power, intuitive insight, and the capacity to foster authentic dialogue—where wound and wisdom unite to serve others and to model how crisis is transformed through connection and flow. All the above is true. On a good day. 😀
Manifesting Through Chiron’s Archetypes
The Saturn-Uranus midpoint, especially as part of a Grand Water Trine with Mercury, Jupiter conjunct Chariklo in Scorpio, and the Ascendant in Pisces, provides a richly layered channel for Chiron’s archetypal energies to manifest in the chart and life path.
Specifically, this configuration invites the integration of opposites: structure versus innovation, tradition versus breakthrough. The tension here reflects Chiron as the Wounded Healer, where early wounds, feelings of alienation, or polarity crises may arise, yet are called to be treated not as obstacles but as gateways for deep transformation. Such a midpoint pattern can activate Chiron’s Sacred Warrior archetype, urging one to face and transmute inherited patterns or relational ruptures with compassion and tenacity.
Within the dimension of the Grand Trine, the flow of water elements allows for the embodiment of Chiron as Mentor and Initiator – someone who naturally guides others through emotional complexity, trauma resolution, and journeys of transformation. Mercury’s presence in the trine signals the Rainbow Bridge archetype—facilitating authentic dialogue, intuitive communication, and soulful understanding. Jupiter lends wisdom, expansion, and hope, amplifying the role of Chiron as Micro-avatar: a person whose lived experience of healing radiates outward as a model for others. Chariklo’s archetypal presence, associated with unconditional regard and gentle boundaries, enhances the Alchemist dimension—fostering the ability to transmute pain into holistic grace, and to offer sanctuary or healing space.
In practice, this configuration may manifest as:
- An ability to mediate and integrate between communities, traditions, or divergent views (Sacred Warrior, Rainbow Bridge).
- Profound vulnerability, yet a rare gift for guiding others through deep waters of emotionality or crisis (Wounded Healer, Mentor).
- Spontaneous insights, innovative solutions, and the courage to challenge status quo when change is necessary (Initiator).
- The creation of environments where others feel seen, heard, and safe to transform—whether through counselling, teaching, ritual, or creative engagement (Micro-Avatar, Alchemist).
In sum, these midpoint dynamics shape how Chiron shows up, in my chart and my life path, not as a single role, but as a living mandala of archetypes. The Grand Trine provides both the vessel and the flow for these energies, turning wounds into sources of wisdom, and complexity into the practice of authentic, healing dialogue with self and others.
(and all that from one little midpoint!)
Example Two: from the chart of activist Greta Thunberg:
Fierce environmental and political activist from a young age, Thunberg has fearlessly faced the “powers that be” and voiced her truth. Now almost 23, she is in the news again. As there is no time for Greta’s birth, we will not refer to houses, Ascendent, Midheaven, etc., Yet there is still a plethora of juicy information from these three MPs (Mercury/Chiron, Saturn/Uranus and Chiron/Sun):
- Greta’s Mercury/Chiron midpoint conjunct Nessus in Capricorn, and square Eris in Aries, closely trining Pluto in Sagittarius, forms a potent configuration underpinning her intense environmental and political activism. Mercury/Chiron midpoints symbolize a mind gifted in healing communication, able to articulate truths that others may resist. With Nessus conjunct this midpoint, themes of confronting abuse, power imbalances, and systemic injustice become central; Nessus in Capricorn highlights the challenging task of exposing and transforming entrenched authoritarian structures and control dynamics while fostering mature responsibility and ethical accountability. The square to Eris—the cosmic disruptor and truth-teller—adds a relentless, fiery drive to challenge status quos, provoke awakening, and incite necessary upheaval to dismantle harmful systems.
Pluto in Sagittarius’ trine to Eris amplifies the transformative potential, sweeping away illusions and inspiring a broad, visionary fight for justice and renewal on a global scale. Together, this configuration fuels Greta’s fearless voice as a mentor and initiator who channels painful truths (Chiron), confronts abusive power (Nessus), and awakens collective consciousness (Eris and Pluto), empowering her to mobilize worldwide activism for planetary healing and justice with uncompromising clarity and passion.
2. The Saturn-Uranus midpoint conjunct Dark Moon Lilith at 25°17 Aries, quincunx Venus in Scorpio, and near Mars conjunct Pholus (the second centaur to be discovered, in 1992), adds a potent layer to Greta’s chart, intensifying her activism with fierce independence, transformative power, and deep emotional drive.
Saturn-Uranus in trine form already blends structure with innovation, but Lilith’s conjunction in Aries injects a primal, wild, and fearless energy that refuses to be silenced or controlled. Lilith in Aries conveys a pioneering spirit marked by courage, defiance, and the relentless assertion of independence—qualities critical for challenging entrenched systems, often with a warrior’s intensity. This placement underscores a refusal to compromise core values, fueling bold activism that demands justice and systemic change.
The exact quincunx to Venus in Scorpio, introduces tension between raw passion and deep relational complexity. Venus in Scorpio brings immense emotional depth, resilience, and intensity to values and connections, linking desire for transformative healing with persistent commitment. Venus’s proximity to Mars conjunct Pholus—the centaur associated with catalytic transformation through crisis—further intensifies a call to action marked by sudden insights, energetic bursts, and turning points that tear down old structures so new ones can emerge. Mars ruling both Aries and Scorpio emphasizes the merging of assertive personal will with deep psychological regeneration.
Together, this complex pattern empowers Greta’s role as a transformative agent, combining disciplined vision (Saturn), radical innovation (Uranus), fearless independence and defiance (Lilith Aries), passionate commitment to healing and justice (Venus Scorpio), and the catalytic power to initiate breakthroughs (Mars-Pholus). This multifaceted potency nourishes her fearless environmental and political activism, enabling her to confront power structures, provoke needed upheaval, and lead with unwavering authenticity and transformative purpose.
3. The Chiron/Sun midpoint. Chiron and Sun are already in an almost exact conjunction in Capricorn. The MP at 11°49 is closely conjunct the Venus/Uranus MP at 11°11 (what some consider a mystical number) as well as the Pluto/Chariklo MP at 11°54. Another warrioress signature is the Venus/Pallas MP at 10°56.
This configuration forms a deeply spiritual and warrior-infused nexus, precisely the kundalini spine and antahkarana of the midpoint mandala, symbolizing the vital bridge between spirit and body, heaven and earth, human and animal kingdoms.
This powerful alignment sharpens Chiron’s archetypal roles: as Wounded Healer and Sacred Warrior, evident in the Capricorn seriousness, discipline, and ambition woven through the Sun’s presence. The Venus/Uranus midpoint adds a mystical spark of freedom, unique values, and unconventional love, emphasizing a capacity to love in creative, disruptive ways that defy norms.
The Pluto/Chariklo MP deepens transformational grace, offering resilience and the ability to hold both fierce change and compassionate healing simultaneously. Meanwhile, the Venus/Pallas midpoint introduces the strategist archetype, the warrior goddess energy of Pallas Athena, inspiring tactical insight and courageous defense of what is just and true.
Together, this configuration embodies the alchemical process of transmuting personal wounding into purposeful wisdom and effective action. Greta’s Chiron/Sun amidst these midpoints suggests a life path where her core identity (Sun) and deepest healing journey (Chiron) interlace with awakening new values, tactical brilliance, and transformative power, all flowing through the Kundalini spine upward into cosmic consciousness.
In practical terms, this ‘constellation’ gifts a radiant inner fire, a unique ability to mediate between earthly realities and higher ideals, fueling bold, strategic activism that is both grounded and visionary—a true embodiment of Chiron as Micro-avatar and Rainbow Bridge. The Chiron/Sun midpoint configuration in Capricorn near 11°49 forms a pivotal axis in the kundalini spine of Thunberg’s chart, symbolizing the vital bridge – an antahkarana – connecting head and heart, mind and body, heaven and earth, and in fact potentially transcending all dualities (Chiron: Micro-Avatar of Unity).
This midpoint’s close conjunction with the Venus/Uranus midpoint infuses an electrifying, visionary quality to her values and relational style, blending innovation and freedom with profound emotionality. The nearby Pluto/Chariklo midpoint deepens her capacity for transformation and graceful endurance, anchoring her activism in both powerful change and compassionate healing.
Adding to this, the Venus/Pallas midpoint adds the warrior-strategist archetype, inspiring tactical insight, courage, and competent defense of her ideals. Together, these interwoven midpoints amplify Chiron’s archetypes of Wounded Healer, Sacred Warrior, Mentor, and Micro-avatar, manifesting as a radiant inner fire that harmonizes disciplined ambition (Capricorn Sun), visionary love, and catalytic transformation. Practically, this empowers Greta to embody Chiron’s alchemical path—transmuting personal and planetary wounds into purposeful, strategic activism that bridges cosmic ideals with grounded, transformative action.
A Map for Healing & Initiation
The Midpoint Mandala of Chiron invites a new way of exploring astrology: not only as a technical discipline, but as a living practice of initiation. Here, planetary midpoints are reframed as powerful thresholds—stations where energies meet, interplay, and reveal deeper layers of meaning. This approach recognizes Chiron—the Wise Centaur, Sacred Warrior, and Initiator—not as a peripheral figure, but as the keystone in a grand, esoteric symmetry that aligns the individual psyche with the architecture of the solar system.
At the heart of the diagram lies a vertical “kundalini spine,” running from Chiron at the root, through the Sun—our heart and mind—toward the Galactic Center, the symbolic crown. This central axis is more than an image: it mirrors the internal journey from wound to wisdom, moving energy upward through the body and psyche. Along this spine are four families of midpoints : Chiron-centric, Octavic, Portalic and Kundalinic (see top of page).
Each planetary pairing traces a subtle polarity:
- Saturn and Uranus: The axis of stability vs. breakthrough; the threshold between the visible and the invisible.
- Jupiter and Neptune: The bridge from cultural law and vision to mystical universality.
- Mars and Pluto: The evolution from personal courage to transpersonal initiation—the sacred warrior path.
- Venus and Neptune, Mercury and Uranus: The ascent from personal affection to divine love, and from analytic mind to intuitive genius.
Viewed in this way, the planetary system appears as a symphonic structure, an initiatory ladder where each midpoint is a rung or moment of transformation. Chiron anchors the Root Chakra, the primal force from which all healing and ascent begin; the Sun mediates consciousness; the higher pairings open gates to the stars.
This diagram thus elucidates not only astronomical relationships but also a psychospiritual journey. Chiron models the passage from pain and mortality to compassionate mentorship, channeling the wisdom said to flow from Sirius, through the Sun, and into earthly experience. The vertical axis—Chiron, Sun, Galactic Center—becomes an antahkarana, a bridge of living fire connecting matter and spirit.
Midpoints as Spaces for Dialogue and Unity
Ultimately, each midpoint offers a “space-between”—a zone where apparent opposites find resolution, where authentic dialogue can soften dualism and seed reconciliation. This is not just a chart technique, but a model for personal and collective healing. In moments of conflict, trauma, or polarization—be it within a relationship or on the world stage—finding and inhabiting the midpoint is the very art of the Middle Path. It is the practice of holding tension without collapse, of bridging worlds, of discovering unity in the heart of difference.
By bringing mindful attention to these mandala spaces, within and without, one may glimpse not only the unique Chiron of the natal chart, but also participate in the greater healing symphony of the cosmos itself.
